Steve Heyer had a college career worth remembering. It all started on 1984 when he was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, to Ronald and Glenda Heyer. During his high school days, he noticeably gained bulk that makes him suitable for American football. He was supported by the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons for a right cleat for him while playing at Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia. By the time he stepped in Maryland, he took up criminology and criminal justice. In 2002, he was a two-year letter winner for his high school football team. The prior year, he led Brookwood High School to a 5-5 record. Before going to college, he was recruited by different schools, such as Georgia, Arkansas, Michigan, Clemson and Ohio State, among others. Eventually, he went to Maryland, and by that time, his Terrapin career kicked off.
During his freshman year in 2002, Steve Heyer played each of Maryland’s 13 games that year, and he started at one game. He tallied seven big “blocks” and in 178 plays, he was penalized just twice. His first career start at left tackle was given a good rating, considering that was his debut at the big stage. He also recorded four “big blocks”. During his sophomore year, he started all 13 games at the left tackle position. By the time his second year season was over, he had the team offensive line’s second highest composite grade of 1.261. He recorded 24 “big blocks” and was called with only two penalties involving 737 plays. It was in his sophomore year where besides being named as the team’s second highest-graded offensive lineman, while he also made two “big blocks” and no missed assignments in 70 plays involved.
By his junior year, Stephon Heyer took it to another level. He was Maryland’s highest-graded offensive lineman while making the start at left tackle in all 11 games. His “big block” tally still runs spectacular at 18, second on the team. He only tallied three sacks after being involved on 651 offensive plays. In one game against NCSU, he suffered an injury, yet that didn’t faze him as he willed his team to victory. Along with teammate Kyle Schmitt, he was the team’s biggest asset in his position. He was penalty-free in numerous plays he was involved with. His senior year was the most spectacular, as he was honorably mentioned as an All-ACC performer and voted by ESPN.com as part of its All-Bowl team during the Champs Sports Bowl. In 2007, Stephon Heyer played in the Hula Bowl, where he was most recognized.
